A Biometric Residence Permit, as defined by the Home Office UK Border Agency is “a residence permit which holds a migrant’s biographic details (name, date and place of birth) and biometric information (facial image and fingerprints), and shows their immigration status and entitlements while they remain in the UK.” The permit is credit card-sized and has increased in use in recent years. While this type of permit isn’t required for every migrant worker, there are certain classifications of migrant worker who are required by law to apply for and obtain this type of permit to be able to work in the UK. If you are in any doubt about what type of permit a migrant worker may be required to have, you should consult with the Home Office to make sure you stay on the right side of the regulations. If you are considering employing a migrant worker who falls under a category requiring a Biometric Residence Permit, it is essential that you familiarise yourself with how to check the permit they present you with.
