John Deere 450c Injector Pump

On

I was using my dozer this weekend and it suddenly began to lose power ( over a period of 5 or so minutes). I turned it off and checked fuel level ( OK ) and upon restarting the unit it ran OK for about 2 or 3 min, then began to lose power again. I changed filters,no improvement. Then removed the check valve from the top of the pump, and cleaned it. Not sure if it had debrie but there seemed to be some grit present around the glass ball. This time I was able to start and the tractor gave full power.

Managed to load it and bring it back to town. My question is whether this indicates a rebuild is due, or could It be something more simple such as a clogged return line? Also what was the result to removing the check valve and running the machine? Did I hurt anything?thanksRick. Seal kit for your pump is part # 24371. I bought a couple last week at $29.26 each.

Kit comes with the new governor weight-retainer ring along with all o-rings, drive-shaft seals, banjo washers and updated fuel-pressure regulator plug. When the pump is off, check the bronze bushing in the drive end of the pump where the shaft-seals ride. If it has bad ridges in it, a new one is part # 16320, price $9.35. That check valve serves as a housing pressure regulator. If you fix the pump, and can't get it cleaned out - or if you drilled it out, replace it.

If you know what you're doing, it's about an hour job to go all through the pump (not counting time to remove and reinstall it). One special tool is required (fluted wrench to remove cam ring pivot stud). I used to rebuild them at a Deere dealership. If your pump is working well, it would be worth your while to just put the kit in - and if the bronze bushing is badly gouged, replace it too or you'll have trouble with your shaft seals and wind up with diesel fuel in your engine oil. The way many, if not most pumps shops work is: Pull the pump apart, then put it together and replace anything that appears worn.

Stick it on a pump stand, check fuel delivery and timing advance, and that's it. Many pumps need no parts at all other than o-rings and seals. Others, need more parts than the whole pump is worth.

That's why many places have a set charge. $500 for fixing a pump that needs $30 in parts, and $500 for fixing a pump that needs $700 in parts.

It's all supposed to average out, but that doesn't help your wallet any if your pump does't need much.
