Printer OK as USB under WIN7, but would not work under WIN10.Ran the SFC scan and it resolved an unrelated error but did not effect the printer USB connection problem.Tried several other installation methods but also ended up as CD drive.Removed all traces of the HP software and cleaned registry.Tried connecting printer via network. This triggers its on-board installation driver which gave the option of connection via USB or TCP/IP. Selected USB and everything works.Thanks, you suggestion got me thinking in the right direction.
I ran into the same problem.Installed the printer and it worked fine but the day after the cd drive would appear.The printer also said it was offline and would not print anymore.But I found a very simple solution: on the printer itself go to the settings menu and look for hp smart install and set it to disabled. As soon as I did this all of the waiting documents in the queue rolled out of the printer and the problem has been solvedever since. The icon of the removable storage is also gone now in windows explorer.
