The action of this exciting thriller takes place in The National Security Agency (NSA) and in Seville. At the very beginning the principal hero who was recently fire from NSA dies from presumable heart attack. But even being dead he continues to exist in the form of his computer program called Digital Fortress. It generates unbreakable codes which can transform NSA's supercomputer TRANSLTR. The problem arises because the programmer left a description code on his ring. Finding this ring creates the plot of the book.
Trevor Strathmore who headed NSA cryptology department sends Linguist Dave Becker to find the ring while he himself and Becker's lover Susan Fletcher serving as a senior code-cracker in NSA think over weaknesses in TRANSLTR. Meanwhile in Seville we follow the chase scenes. The main events, however, are happening at NSA. Among murder, infernos and explosions it suddenly becomes clear that Strathmore possesses an agenda aiming beyond breaching Digital Fortress.

I have seen John Scalzi's quote on Dan Brown's work - but this wasn't an issue of it not being 'high literature'. I'm a technical fellow, work with computers, and understand crypto - but this wasn't even about the (very serious) technical issues with this book. I was most upset about some really basic stuff.
Things like editing, basic science, and characters.For example, here's a short excerpt: 'The entire paragraph before this carefully detailed how he. How does something like that get past basic proof-reading?As another example, he has a.The review quotes on the jacket call it 'pure genius', a 'brainy thriller', 'brain-teasing', 'exceedingly clever' etc etc. I thought the few puzzles in the book were extremely simple, and the solutions were only drawn-out by the apparent stupidity of the characters - e.g. The inability of these top-class NSA cryptographers to recognise, or of the university-professor linguist to immediately recognise.
These characters just made no sense: their abilities and actions didn't match their positions or backgrounds.So, - I'm confused. This book has been recommended to me by two different people, they loved it, and I absolutely hated it - but more than that I just can't see how anyone could enjoy it.What have I missed - where has my view of this book gone so wrong? Why do so many people rave about this book in particular, and Dan Brown's work in general? Am I thinking too simplistically about this, is there something much more complex going on in this book that has completely eluded me?. There's a really sexy girl who's also really fucking smart.
Then there's also a really sexy dude who's also super smart and has an eidetic memory and is just fucking awesome at everything. They're drawn into a place of intrigue and quickly discover a conspiracy.
They go on the run and have to take refugee with sexy and smart guy/girls mentor. Together they solve the mystery and go to the final set piece location. The mentor was behind it all along. They kill that dude or put him in prison or something using their super sexy smarts.Then they fuck.Every Dan Brown novel ever. The reviews on the jacket always mean nothing. They are going to cherry-pick the best ones. They will never pick one saying 'illogical' to sell a high-tech thriller book.People enjoy different kinds of books.
I had a ton of fun reading The Da Vinci Code and Angel's of Demons but they aren't favourite books of mine by a long-shot. I liked these, but just finished Ready Player One which is probably in the top 5 worst books I've ever read. Most people I've talked to have given Ready Player One perfect scores on Goodreads. People like different things. That's the beauty of art, it's completely subjective. No, there is not anything more complex.
Having read the book myself I would have to say of all of Dan Brown's books this is by far the worst. Digital Fortress and his other none Langdon book Deception Point are just not that good.
As for his Langdon novels, those are so-so and better for beach reading more then anything else. He is not a great writer by any means and I would put him more in line with Patterson and other cheap pulp writers before I would put him on the same shelf as King, Clancy, and Ludlum.That being said you can't be mad at the cupcake for not being a salad. I don't like them all that much but I still find myself reading them for some reason. I like not having to think about it. His puzzles do get slightly better in his later stuff. Although he does have a tendency to throw people into ridiculously stupid situations for no reason. Inferno, Angels & Demons, and to some degree The Da Vinci Code were relatively good (Inferno being the best by far, the stakes felt more real for some reason to me) The Lost Symbol was a mistake but it was by far better then Deception Point and Digital Fortress.
I haven't read Deception Point but I've had a similar problem with some of his other books, especially The Lost Symbol.To quote from:historical inaccuracy isn't itself the problem. The problem comes from the fact that Robert Langdon is supposed to be an expert, but consistently ignores, or rather, is unaware of, the obvious answer to questions when such answer would make things less mysterious.There's a scene in the book where Langdon is giving a lecture to a bunch of college freshmen, and he just, like, blows their minds, by pointing out that taking communion and bowing before the cross consists of symbolic cannibalism and bowing before a torture device. And I realized that this is Brown's attitude toward his audience in a nutshell. Langdon would be less of a world-renowned Harvard professor and more of a low-tier community college professor, or a guest host on Ancient Aliens. Because the fact is, Robert Langdon comes across as a guy who memorized a bunch of facts, but ignores the obvious explanations and relevant connections. He's a hack.This is pretty standard across his oeuvre.
